When generator practice slips, the failures tend to be ordinary: a battery past its life, fuel left untested, a transfer that was never tried under real load, an alarm nobody answered. The result is an outage, lost customer trust and, under many service agreements, financial penalties.
Backup Power Habits From Experienced Operators
We know that keeping backup plant ready is a discipline, not a one-off purchase. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our teams design, commission and maintain the generators that critical sites depend on. Our systems are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
The best practices below come from that work. They apply whether you run one site or a portfolio, and whether your generators are new or have been in service for years.
Design for the Failure You Expect
Good practice starts with redundancy. Size the plant so the site still carries its full critical load with at least one generator out of service, and think about what happens during maintenance as well as faults. Keep your design as simple as the uptime target allows, because every extra layer of switching is another thing you must test, maintain and explain to an auditor.
Rate the sets for the duty they will really see. Backup plant that may run for days during a long grid outage needs a rating suited to that, not only short emergency runs. Check emissions limits early, since they shape both the engine choice and how often you can test. Our emission standards guide covers the main rules.
Treat Fuel as Critical Equipment
Diesel stored for months degrades and collects water. Sample and test it on a schedule, polish or filter it when results drift and keep tanks as full as practical to limit condensation. Know how long your stored fuel lasts at full load and have refuelling contracts that work during a regional emergency.
Record every delivery and test. When an auditor or tenant asks how you know the fuel is good, the records answer for you. If your site has several tanks, track each one separately, because a single bad tank can take down the generators it feeds while the others look fine.
Test Under Real Load, Then Write It Down
Starting a generator and letting it idle proves very little. Run sets under meaningful load on a regular schedule, using a load bank where the building load is too light. Periodically test the full sequence: grid failure, transfer, run, and return, with the actual switchgear and controls in the loop.
Log your results, alarms and fixes, and review the trends every month. If you only look at a test when it fails, you miss the slow decline that comes first. Rising start times, falling battery voltage or creeping temperatures are early warnings. Our AI data centre power guide explains why faster-changing AI loads make transient testing more important.
Plan for Growth and Prime Power
As demand grows, many operators add prime generation beside backup sets. Our hyperscale EPC/O&M teams deliver AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute, as well as the New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA.
The wider range includes natural gas engines/stations, used/new gas turbines, gas turbine generators and a remanufactured GE Frame 6B for large blocks of power. See our data centre power page or browse available sets.
Local Teams Near Your Compute Campus Power Site
Data-centre schedules are won or lost in permitting, gas supply and interconnection, so USP&E puts its US offices first. Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) give you two US bases for engineering reviews, procurement follow-up and site visits, and both teams work your compute campus black-start plan alongside you rather than from a sales desk.
Behind them, London (162-168 Regent Street) handles structuring, bonding and finance; Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) owns engineering and project controls for black-start gensets, Frame 6B units and gas turbine generators; Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock) supports design and commissioning; and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) manages China manufacturing and supply-chain follow-up.
American campuses are served from Knoxville and Colorado Springs. Contracts run through London, and our Johannesburg, Cape Town and Wuxi teams add engineering depth and sourcing. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. That network stands behind 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, run under ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified systems.
What USP&E Has Delivered for Compute Campus Power Buyers
Best practice is proven in operation. These projects show how USP&E delivers power that stays available.
- USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers.
- A giga-project developer in the Middle East: USP&E supplied three zero-hour Siemens SGT-400 gas turbines as the single technical and commercial interface.
- A gold mine in North-West Africa: USP&E supplied and installed a Caterpillar backup power station of low-hour Cat 3516B gensets with new switchgear, on time and on budget. Read the case study.
How to Put Generator Best Practice in Place
Your 3-step plan: 1. Share your generator fleet, test records and uptime target. 2. Get a gap review against best practice with clear fixes. 3. Upgrade, test and maintain the plant with one team.
- Set the redundancy target and document it.
- Design fuel storage and polishing for the longest outage you plan for.
- Test with real load, not only no-load runs.
- Train the operators on transfer and failure drills.
- Keep spares and service records on site.
- Review the plan after every event and every test.

FAQ: Data Center Generator Best Practices
What are data center generator best practices?
USP&E follows a few core practices: design redundancy so one set can be out of service, rate generators for long outages, test fuel on a schedule, run sets under real load, test the full transfer sequence and keep clear records of every test and fix.
How often should data center generators be tested?
USP&E recommends regular load runs on a fixed schedule plus periodic full-sequence tests that simulate grid failure and return. Exact intervals depend on your standards, permits and tenant agreements, but idle starts alone should never count as proof that the plant is ready.
Why test generators with a load bank?
USP&E uses load banks because building load is often too light to test sets properly. Running a diesel engine lightly for long periods can cause wet stacking and hides faults. A load bank lets you prove full output, temperatures and voltage recovery safely and on schedule.
How should backup diesel fuel be managed?
USP&E manages backup fuel by sampling and testing on a schedule, filtering or polishing when results drift and keeping tanks full to limit condensation. Refuelling contracts that work during regional emergencies, plus records of every delivery and test, complete the picture.
Which USP&E offices support data center generators?
USP&E looks after data centre backup plant across the USA through its Knoxville and Colorado Springs engineers, who sit near many large campuses. Contract and finance questions go to London. Johannesburg and Cape Town add design capacity, and Wuxi handles generator and switchgear sourcing in China.
What data center power has USP&E delivered?
USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries. For data centres, USP&E refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers, alongside many backup and prime diesel stations for critical sites.
Is USP&E a broker for data center generators?
USP&E is not a broker. We are an EPC and O&M business whose people specify, fit, load test and service backup generator plant. When a review finds a weak point, that same organisation makes the upgrade and keeps the sets ready afterwards, with nothing handed off to a third party.
How quickly can USP&E review my generator practices?
USP&E can begin a review as soon as you share your fleet list, test records and uptime target. Engineers look first for gaps that could cause an outage, such as untested transfers or old batteries, so the most urgent fixes are clear early.
Make Every Backup Hour Count
Design for failure, care for fuel and test under real load, and your generators will hold when the grid does not. Let practice slip, and an ordinary fault becomes an outage. USP&E will help you keep backup plant ready.
