Compute Campus Backup Fuel Store for GT

You run your compute campus on pipeline gas, and that gas has been reliable so far. But pipelines have outages, compressor stations trip and winter demand can tighten supply, and your tenants expect the lights to stay on regardless.

If your backup fuel store is undersized, poorly maintained or not connected to dual-fuel machines, a gas interruption becomes a full outage. That means failed workloads, contract penalties and lost trust, and it exposes every tenant on the campus to risk you could have controlled.

USP&E as Your Guide to Backup Fuel That Really Backs You Up

We know backup fuel is easy to underfund because it may sit unused for years. Since 2002 USP&E has built 150+ power stations and supplied about 25 000 MW, and our 400+ engineers and project managers design dual-fuel plants and fuel stores that work when gas does not. We work under ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 systems with FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

Define the Duty Your Backup Fuel Must Cover

Start with the duty. How long must your campus run without pipeline gas, at what load, and how quickly can fuel deliveries resume in a regional emergency? Your answer may be hours, days or a week, and it drives tank size, delivery contracts and permits. Agree the duty with your tenants and lenders, and write it into your design basis.

Consider which loads must run on backup fuel. You may choose to carry full campus load, critical tenants only or a defined fraction. Each choice changes fuel volume, the number of dual-fuel machines and how you manage load during a long gas outage.

Make Your Machines Dual-Fuel Ready

Backup fuel is useless if your machines cannot burn it. Many gas turbine generators can run on liquid fuel, but dual-fuel capability must be specified, installed and tested, including fuel forwarding pumps, filters, nozzles and controls. Transfer from gas to liquid while loaded is demanding, so test it at commissioning and periodically after.

Natural gas engines/stations may need separate diesel units for backup, or dual-fuel engines with their own limits. Check emissions permits for liquid fuel operation, because hours on liquid fuel are often restricted, and plan your duty within those limits.

Maintain Tanks and Fuel Quality, and Plan for Growth

Stored diesel degrades. Water, microbial growth and sediment build up over time, especially in fuel that rarely moves. Install water separation and filtration, test fuel regularly, polish or turn over stock on a schedule and keep tank inspections current. Secondary containment and leak detection protect you and your permits.

A remanufactured GE Frame 6B or used/new gas turbines used as bridges should be checked for dual-fuel capability too. As AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute expand with modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1 blocks, for 50 Hz and 60 Hz with capacity slots from 2028, grow your fuel store under one hyperscale EPC/O&M plan.

Proof from Recent Compute Campus Power Projects

You want proof that USP&E delivers turbine plants that keep running under pressure. These projects show reliable delivery in demanding settings.

  • USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers.
  • MAN redeployment, Iraq: USP&E moved a stranded 32 MW MAN plant, plus two surplus MAN generators, across four countries to an industrial buyer facing 12 to 18 month lead times for new engines. Read the case study.
  • NEOM, Saudi Arabia: USP&E supplied three zero-hour Siemens SGT-400 gas turbines as the single technical and commercial interface, and the client reported savings of over $10 million. Read the case study.

HowTo: Build the equipment and delivery path

Your 3-step plan: 1. Share your gas supply terms, tenant duty and site plan under NDA. 2. Receive a backup fuel strategy with tank sizing and dual-fuel scope. 3. Install, test fuel transfer and hand over with accountable O&M.

  1. Set the backup fuel policy: hours of cover, protected halls, shed order, and restocking assumptions.
  2. Confirm dual-fuel capability for a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, used/new gas turbines, and natural gas engines/stations, and list which can transfer.
  3. Shortlist units at the central inventory hub and request fuel system configuration and transfer test records.
  4. Reserve tank-farm space and fuel interfaces for modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1, 50/60 Hz, with capacity slots from 2028.
  5. Design storage, polishing, sampling, bunding, and fire protection with named owners and permits.
  6. Demonstrate fuel transfer under load at commissioning and schedule periodic transfer tests before handover.

FAQ: Compute Campus Backup Fuel Store for GT

How much backup fuel does a gas turbine compute campus need?

USP&E sizes backup fuel from the agreed duty: how long the campus must run without pipeline gas, at what load and how quickly deliveries can resume. That may be hours or days, and it should be agreed with tenants and lenders and written into the design basis.

Can gas turbines run on liquid backup fuel?

USP&E confirms that many gas turbines can run on liquid fuel when dual-fuel capability is specified, installed and tested. Fuel forwarding pumps, filters, nozzles and controls are required, and transfer from gas to liquid under load must be proven at commissioning and periodically after.

Where are USP&E’s offices for US compute campus fuel and power projects?

USP&E links US compute campus projects to its offices in Colorado Springs and Knoxville for US-side engineering, site walks and equipment follow-up. London sets up commercial structure, Johannesburg leads design and project controls, Cape Town adds engineering depth and Wuxi expedites balance-of-plant.

Has USP&E delivered turbine capacity for data centre developers?

USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. Public case studies include redeploying a 32 MW MAN plant to Iraq and supplying three zero-hour Siemens SGT-400 turbines for NEOM as the single technical and commercial interface.

Is USP&E a broker for backup fuel systems?

USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that engineers, supplies, builds, commissions and operates power plants, so the team sizing your backup fuel store is also accountable for the turbines running on it during a gas outage.

How fast can USP&E respond to a backup fuel review?

USP&E can review your gas supply terms, tenant requirements and site plan as soon as you share them. Engineers define the duty and identify gaps in tanks or dual-fuel capability first, and the timeline then depends on permits and equipment lead times.

How do you keep stored diesel in good condition?

USP&E keeps stored diesel healthy with water separation, filtration, regular testing and scheduled polishing or stock turnover. Tank inspections, secondary containment and leak detection protect fuel quality and permits, so the fuel works properly when a gas interruption finally arrives.

Do emissions permits limit liquid fuel operation?

USP&E checks emissions permits early because hours on liquid fuel are often restricted. The backup duty must fit within those limits, or the permit may need amendment, so fuel strategy and permitting are planned together rather than discovered during an emergency.

Keep Your Campus Running When the Gas Stops

Get backup fuel right and a pipeline outage becomes an operating mode, not a crisis. Get it wrong and your tenants learn the limits of your plant the hard way. USP&E will help you size, test and maintain fuel that is ready when needed.
